RURAL POLK COUNTY ROADS;
Polk County has divided it's rural street numbering system into "Streets" that run
north and south, and "Avenues" that run east to west. A line extending west to east
along Woodland Avenue in West Des Moines defines the north and south division
of the county grid. Similarly, drawing a line north to south using South Union
Avenue in southern Des Moines defines the east and west grid divisions. Any road
outside a city's boundaries will therefore be designated as a street, or avenue, and
will have a Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, or Southwest prefix. A few of the rural
roads have retained their original names, but most of them now have been numbered for simplicity.
DAILEY DRIVE (Now Northwest 43rd Avenue, from Northwest 9th to Northwest
6th Avenue)
NORTHWEST NISSEN DRIVE (Now called Mason Drive, east of Northwest 128th Street, the eastern half has been flooded out by
Little Big Creek's Connection to Saylorville Lake)
ENTERPRISE ROAD (Now Northeast 94th Avenue)
PANORA SPEEDWAY
NORTHWEST WILLIAMS DRIVE (It ran northeast from Northwest Madrid Drive,
intersecting Northwest Hug Drive before it
reached Northwest 138th Avenue. It began on the
north side of N.W. Madrid Drive, halfway between
Northwest Woods Lane and Northwest 125th
Avenue. It no longer exists because of Saylorville
Lake.)
NORTHWEST PETERSON DRIVE (It ran diagonally from about 1 mile east of the
Des Moines river on Jester Park Drive, in a Northesterly
direction until it met up with Northwest 126th Avenue. Flooded
out by Saylorville Lake in Section 34, Madison Township)
NORTHWEST HUG DRIVE (It began on Northwest Williams Drive, about 1 block
from the middle of Northwest 138th Avenue, and
proceeded southeast roughly 1 block at all times along
Big Creek's old shoreline. It has been flooded out by
Big Creek Lake. Another Northwest Hug Drive is currently
north of Polk City)
NORTHWEST McBRIDE DRIVE (It started on the west end of Nortwest 90th Avenue
to the west end of Northwest 110th Avenue, south
of Polk City, intersecting Northwest Corydon
Drive about halfway. It has been flooded out by
Saylorville Lake.
NORTHWEST CORYDON DRIVE (Began running Southwest from Northwest
McBride Drive from the top center of Section 13,
Jefferson Township, to Northwest Beaver Drive
In The Center of Section 14. Both the road, and
the tiny town of Corydon it led up to have been
flooded out by Saylorville Lake.)
