NAMES OF STREETS AND ROADS THAT HAVE EITHER BEEN CHANGED, DE-LISTED, OR OBLITERATED AROUND POLK COUNTY OR IN CITIES:
(Modern day references are given in parenthesis.)

(NEW ADDITIONS ON THIS AND FOLLOWING PAGES
                                   ARE HIGHLIGHTED IN RED.)

This page and the next is a work in progress, and I'm still trying to pin down the location and proper description of some of the streets and roads. Until then, I've posted the names anyway as I've gotten them, and eventually I'll include the information following each entry.

Many of the Avenues, roads, and streets mentioned on this page and the next are culled from maps, legal descriptions and city directories published ever since Polk County and Des Moines were founded. The biggest turnover in street name changes occured in the early 1880's, and in 1906, although changes were occuring each decade. Basically a developer would come in and name all the streets to suit him, followed by the city that would impose order by asserting it's grid system naming over the area in question. A great deal of the pre-1900 streets and roads I suspect betrayed their depiction on maps as straight and orderly avenues of commerce, and were not much more than dirt roads and cinder paths. Others probably were more serving as property divisions on a map, more than actually existing.

Seemingly, some of the information might seem to contradict other information unless you realise as that as streets were lengthened, their names were changed, so that a certain length of street could have been known by several names in the past 150+ years. In some cases when a street crossed a boundry of a developement, it was then called by another name, making it more confusing, but they co-existed for a time end to end until the city planners unified the segments under one name.

There have been streets that have been have been "twins" (Cora and Ora, Ennis and Ellis), and others that will never probably have their names re-applied elsewhere because of confusion (King Street, Heckman Avenue, Beaver Road, Dean Street, and so on..)

If you don't see a street that you are looking for in the information on this and the next page, it may still exist in some form I suggest using MAPBLAST or MAPQUEST to find the street first. If that fails, e-mail me at Glossamir@Yahoo.com and I might be able to help you locate the street you are looking for.

Some of the biggest occurences that changed the layout of Des Moines area streets are as follows;

  * Urban renewal in the late 1950's and 1960's.
  * The construction of  McVicar Freeway in the mid 1960's
  * The changing of the course of the Raccoon river's mouth to a more
southeasterly path, that took out the northwest corner of South Fort Des
Moines in the 1920's, and put it where Sec Taylor stadium sits today.
  * The concentration of population on the west side of the Des Moines river for
     the most part.
*Construction of river levees in the central Des Moines area, that wiped out any
street that may have bordered the rivers.

Des Moines' longest unbroken street is Army Post Road, but if they ever construct
the segment between 73rd Street and 86th Street, University will then hold that title.

Des Moines' shortest street (with at least one address on it) is said to be Webster
Street in the Clifton Heights neighborhood. At one time it connected to Indianola
Road, but now is a street and a driveway both.

I consider Motley Street the worst name for a street in existence today. End street
thankfully was changed to Olive Street.

......and then there's the "Mystery Streets". In the Des Moines City Directories
of the late 1950's, early 1960's they list streets that seemingly have no correspondence
to Des Moines or any of it's suburbs. Even all the people listed as living on
the streets fail to show up in the directory in any way. I'm at a loss to explain
the reason these listings appear, but at any rate, here is what information is
            provided by the directories;

COPSE (From 801 Lee, north to Grand Avenue)
ESPER (From Maple to Curtis, 1 block south of Jones
LAWRENCE (From 900 Pilgrim, east to Anne)
OLYMPIA AVENUE (From 519 Salem north to Laffayette)
                      LEE (?)
                      CURTIS (?)
                      JONES (?)
                      PILGRIM (?)
                      ANNE (?)
                      SALEM (?)
                      LAFAYETTE (?)

I've since learned that these may have been what was known in the printing business as "woolies". These were purposely
printed mistakes that were designed to prove that someone had copied and published your material. They added mistakes
that the plagarist would be unaware of.
